Genomicepi.com updates
Over 180 trainings and webinars, new resources page added
Hope you’re all having a great summer! I’m coming to you today from beautiful Leavenworth, Washington.
Updated trainings page
I’ve added over thirty new trainings and webinars to the training database! This is a collection of free recorded trainings/webinars that range from introductory molecular biology of viruses (just added from the Northwest Pathogen Genomics Center of Excellence) to practical applications in genomic epidemiology.
The trainings are tagged with the providing organization, dated posted, as well as some basic tags about topics so you can search. You can access it either at https://www.genomicepi.com/training.html, or directly at Airtable. Do you know of ones that I missed? Submit them here, I’ll review and then add them to the page.
New resources page
I’ve also added a new resources page. This contains links to organizations, newsletters, podcasts, and social media that I’ve found to be helpful. You can find that page here. A few organizations and resources that I especially want to highlight from that page are listed below.
Wellcome Connecting Science
Our mission is to enable everyone to explore genomic science and its impact on research, health and society. We form collaborations and work with partners from across the globe to ensure our impact and reach is as wide as possible.
https://www.wellcomeconnectingscience.org/about-us/
Wellcome Connecting Sciences does a tremendous job producing high-quality content and making it globally accessible. They have several MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) related to pathogen genomics that they maintain as freely available at all times, and periodically make available with instructors that interact with learners. Check out all their courses and conferences here.

ECDC GenEpi-BioTrain
Another great resource is from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control. They have a four year bioinformatics and genomic epidemiology training programme that runs 2023-2026. Courses are available for live enrollment, or recordings can be viewed of past courses. You’ll need to sign up for a free ECDC training account, and then you can access and enroll here. There is a great mix of foundational trainings as well as pathogen-specific trainings.
Wrapping up
The inspiration for adding the resources page came from a recent conversation I had with the US CDC’s Office of Advanced Molecular Detection communications team. It was fun to walk through different points of my career with them, and highlight some of the ways that I have been fortunate to have people give me opportunities to attend trainings and events that made a huge impact on my career. That appreciation is one of the driving forces behind why I started genomicepi.com - to make sure others have access to resources and opportunities to be able to further their interest in applying pathogen genomics to infectious disease epidemiology.
If you’d like to read the whole CDC article, you can find that here. Special thanks to the CDC OAMD group who sponsored so many of the events, conferences, and positions that helped me along the way. Also thanks to their wonderful comms team who were so fun to work with on the article!
